This topic addresses two key factors that affect lighting quality and effectiveness:

Luminance Ratios.  The ranges of luminance in any field of view.

Adaptation. As scenes change, our eyes can adapt to a very wide range of luminance levels. But, we need time to adapt. 

This topic explores various design issues relative to both luminance ratios and adaptation.

Computer-generated images. Multiple images are now being generated via computer simulation to show the visual impacts of various task-ambient lighting approaches.
